What to Expect in a Hypnotherapy Session
Curious about hypnotherapy but not quite sure what happens during a session? Perhaps you've seen hypnosis on TV, or you're wondering whether you'll be able to relax, lose control or have to revisit painful memories.
The reality is much simpler. Clinical hypnotherapy is a collaborative process that helps you work towards changing the thoughts, feelings and automatic responses that keep you stuck. It’s a way of getting in rapport with your own subconscious mind again, so your both on the same side.
Here's what you can expect when working with me.
1. We start with a conversation
Before we begin, we'll discuss what’s been happening, what you’ve tried already, and what you’d like to change. Perhaps it’s social anxiety, negative internal dialogue, panic attacks, sleep difficulties, or you simpy keep reacting in ways you'd rather not.
I'll ask questions to understand your unique situation and identify what keeps the problem going. The way you experience anxiety is different to someone else, so whilst I am using a proven set of techniques, I am fully customising them to your unique needs.
You don't need to know exactly why it happens or have all the answers. That's something we will explore together.
2. You'll be guided into hypnosis
Once we've established what we're working towards, I'll explain what hypnosis is, how it works, and what you can expect. It's important that you feel comfortable, safe and confident before we begin, so we'll only move into hypnosis when you're ready.
Forget the Hollywood version. You won't lose control, fall asleep or be at the mercy of someone else's suggestions. You don't need to empty your mind, be especially imaginative or try hard to make something happen.
Hypnosis involves focused attention, often accompanied by relaxation. Some people feel deeply calm, while others experience it as a quieter, more focused state of mind. You'll remain aware of what's happening and can communicate with me throughout.
I'll guide you through the process.
3. We work on changing the pattern
Once you’re in hypnosis, this is where the real work happens. I'll use therapeutic techniques tailored to your situation to work towards changing the patterns that are keeping you stuck. This often involves…
Changing how you respond to uncomfortable feelings. In hypnosis you'll discover that you have more control and influence over challenging thoughts and emotions. You’ll learn how to respond to them in such a way that sends a message to the subconscious that you’re safe, which turns the alarm down for good.
Letting go of the past. Hypnosis is incredibly accurate at pin pointing where and when a particular problem first became a part of your life. From here, we can reframe limiting beliefs, release emotional charge and update the subconscious, so you can move forward towards the life you truly want.
Practising confidence in hypnosis. You’ll then rehearce situation that usually make you feel anxious, experiencing yourself feeling calm, confident and self-assured. This helps the new responses feel more familiar to the brain and naturally transfer into every day life.
4. What happens afterwards?
After the session, we'll discuss your experience and any changes you've noticed.
Sessions are typically scheduled about a week apart, giving you time to return to everyday life, notice the changes taking place, and allow the work to settle – while maintaining momentum towards your goals.
Sometimes, a shift is immediately noticeable. Other times, you'll recognise changes over the following days as you encounter situations that previously triggered the familiar response.
We'll review your progress at subsequent appointments and adjust our approach where needed.
You won't be expected to force change or constantly analyse yourself. The aim is to help the changes carry over into everyday life, where they matter most.
5. How many sessions will I need?
Every person and problem is different, but many clients begin noticing meaningful changes within 3–6 sessions. We'll use your progress to guide the process, addressing anything that needs further attention rather than simply repeating the same session each time.
The goal is to help you move forward with greater freedom and confidence, without needing ongoing support indefinitely.
6. Does it work over zoom?
Absolutely! Many of my clients love the convenience of zoom sessions – it’s just as effective as in-person. Zoom sessions also has the additional bonus of being in the comfort of your own home, as well as saving time and money on travel. All that’s required is a comfortable chair, a stable connection, and some good headphones.
